When Jesus Christ was
speaking with a woman of Samaria He made the statement; “God is a Spirit:
and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth”
(John 4:34). Like this woman of Samaria, all people
everywhere are fundamentally religious and possess an inherent desire to
worship. Yet because of the fall in
Adam, our natural inclination to worship is corrupted and marred. Rather than it being totally focused upon the
true God of heaven and earth, our worship is misdirected and misplaced. Thus, in regards to the woman of Samaria who
worshipped with her people in Mt. Gerizim, Christ said; “Ye worship ye know
not what” (John 4:22).
A prevailing attitude
regarding matters of religion and worship is that one person’s opinion is as
good as another’s. Indeed, many people
in the realm of religion are doing what is right in their own eyes. That is, they do not look to the Bible for
direction, but based upon their own ideals and desires, choose where they want
to worship and what they want to worship.
They feel it is up to them to decide whether to attend a local church or
to worship in the great outdoors, or even whether to bow before an image or
shrine. The word “worship” means to
adore, reverence, regard, or pay homage to; thus our worship can also be
focused upon anything else in this world including movie stars and athletes,
ourselves, our possessions, and our own pleasures.
Yet the above statement of
Jesus Christ in the book of John emphasises the fact that there is only one
true God and only one true worship. And
the true worship of the true God must be done in spirit and in truth. All other worship, no matter how sincere or
dedicated is not acceptable to God. The
worship of anything other than the true God of heaven and earth is vain and
constitutes a transgression of the very first of the Lord’s commandments; “Thou shalt have no other gods
before me” (Exodus
20:3).
As there
are many types of religions, many types of churches, and many objects of
worship in our present world, the obvious conclusion is that one cannot be as
good as another. For this reason, it
behoves every sincere seeker of true worship to search the Scriptures, for
God’s word is truth (John 17:17).
The
New Testament church was instituted by Jesus Christ as the “house of God”,
“the church of the living God,, and “the pillar and ground
of the truth” (I Timothy 3:15).
Therefore, it is the sincere desire of the Faith Missionary Baptist
Church to uphold and maintain the principles of divine worship set forth in the
Scriptures in our worship services.
Likewise, it is our sincere desire to propagate, preach, and teach, the
precious truth of God’s word in a spirit of Christian love. We extend a cordial welcome to any who are in
our area to attend our services, with the expectation and hope that the
services will honour the true God of heaven and earth, edify and encourage
believers, and convict the lost unto their need of salvation in the person and
work of the Lord Jesus Christ.
